Another option would be to install an im server that is low on resources and not eating your sdcard. I think xmpp would work a lot better on a pi. Prosody, ejabberd or snikket should work nicely.

I have used Firefox in ram for a couple of months now without problems and am pretty happy with it.
Conversions on android keeps a websocket connection open to receive messages. It’s supposed to generate very little overhead in battery consumption. The unified push app on android uses the same technique to provide other apps with pushes. So you could set conversations to be the push provider on your phone and would not need the unified push app any more. This way you would be using the same amount of battery as before.
The conversations xmpp support channel is very helpful if you have further questions: someone there will also very likely know if any apps with unified push support exist.
Ctrl +alt + F1 fixes errors for me after waking up the machine. Might be worth a try.

There is no need fire up a dedicated machine to do this. Use your router/ap running openwrt and connect a hdd via usb. The machine needs at least 128 Mb RAM (256 mb would be better). Install the transmission package, set it up, add a gig of swap space on the hdd and you are good to go. The AP runs 24/7 anyways so there will be very few extra power consumption. Vpns often don’t allow port forwarding (mullvad has stopped support recently if I remember correctly). You can just be a passive node and not often ports, that should work good enough. Consider seeding parts of sci-hub. it’s a project worth supporting imho.

I would try to find something a bit newer. Core 2 Duos are really power hungry. Find one with an i5 processor and a T at the end of the number, like i5 3450T or something. This will be a little less performant but run at 30 watt max compared to the core 2 duos 150 watt. Fujitsu esprimo are also a good cheap option and both lenovo and Fujitsu offer rather tiny pcs that work excellent for severs.
Disco elysium is considered one of the best crpgs ever made. Be aware though, it’s devoid of combat and more in the vain of planescape torment (another great crpg that is focused on telling a story first and foremost). Disco Elysium should be worth 15 euro on its own in my opinion.
If you just want to talk, mumble would be a very lightweight alternative.
I would recommend to get a Fujitsu esprimo small form factor pc or a lenovo sff with an i5 6500 cpu. They sell used for less that 100 euros. Get a half size gpu (gtx 1650 or 1050 ti or amd rx 6400). And you will have a perfect pc for gaining in 1080p in your living room on the cheap. Those pcs are a good compromise for speed and size, any smaller and they will get way too hot. Also these are well build office PCs, that will run very quiet.
I would recommend pop_os as a distro. Its made for gaining and I use it as my daily driver.

I host my own email on uberspace. It’s a vps where you pay what you think is appropriate per month. You can install whatever you want on the vps, but they have a very good tutorial page on how to set up services. Email among them. I set it up a couple of years ago and it just works. Email is kind of pre set up as well, so should be easy enough to get working. You can enable the spam filter as well. You can also set up alias emails for every account you open up with some other provider. I name them after that provider, for example: ebay@my-domain.com
That way I always know where the spam is coming from and just delete the alias address if necessary.
I have been using ps3 controllers on Linux for a couple of years now. They are dead cheap used but you might need to replace the batteries if you need to use them wirelessly. The drivers were included in popos, so plug and play basically. Just get a compatible bluetooth USB dongle, or maybe the deck already has Bluetooth? The original ps3 controllers are very sturdy and work reliably. I would still be using my old ps2 controllers, which are basically the same, but the usb adapters seem to brake way to often and wireless play is rather convenient.
